Los Angeles Air Foce Base -- Here's the latest news of interest to the LAAFB community.

Limited Shuttle Service on Aug. 31

Due to AFSPC Family Day the Aerospace/LAAFB Inter-facility Shuttle "A" will be on-call only, Aug. 31. For service please call Vehicle Ops at 653-6828. The shuttle from Raytheon parking will not be running since parking on base will be open that day.

September Clinic Closure Announced

The 61st Medical Group (both LAAFB and Ft Mac Clinics) including pharmacy will be closed Monday, Sept. 3 for the Federal Holiday and Thursday, Sept. 6 for the clinic's monthly Training Day. In the event of an emergency (threat to life, limb or eye-sight), please dial 911. The on-call provider can be reached at (310) 653-CURE (2873)--option 7.

LAAFB Toastmasters Club Meetings Held

The club meets every Wednesday, noon to 1 p.m. That's closer than "freeway close," and you can bring your lunch. We still have room for a few more success-oriented individuals. Is that you? 8-Ball Pool Tournament to be Held

An 8-Ball tournament will be held Fri., Aug. 31 in the Harbor View Lounge on Fort MacArthur. The Community Center is hosting the competition. Registration begins at 6:30 p.m. and the tournament at 7 p.m. First and second place winners will receive prizes.

One-Day Hike Up Mt. Baldy

Join Outdoor Rec. for a day hike up Mt. Baldy, Saturday, Sept. 8. The hike is 11.25 miles round trip with 4300 ft. elevation gain. This is a 7-hour strenuous hike with a few difficult spots. Starting on the road to San Antonio Falls and moving onto a trail that will get your heart pounding. The cost of $15 covers transportation and guide. One-Day Rock Climbing at Joshua Tree

This class-style trip is designed for beginners, but experienced climbers will be challenged too. A pre-trip ground school will be held at Outdoor Recreation Wednesday, Sep. 12 at 6 p.m. The trip to Joshua Tree will be held. Sept. 15. The day will include a discussion of climbing techniques and safety, bouldering (low angle climbing without ropes) and roped climbing. Trip cost is $35.00 and includes transportation, harness, helmet, top rope supplies, and instruction. Rock shoes are not included. Community Center Sponsors TV Taping Trips

Sign up for a taping and tour of one of America's longest running game shows with new host Drew Carey, Sept. 12. Cost for this event is $6 and is open to all I.D. cardholders ages 18 and up. Van departs from the Fort MacArthur Community Center at 8 a.m. and returns around 5 p.m. Call (310) 653-8225 for more information.

Community Center Renovation Closure Announced

The Community Center will be closing down beginning Sunday, Sept. 2 in order to conduct major renovations. It will reopen on Nov. 12. During the upgrades there will be no access to the facility with the exception of selected scheduled events. The computer room and the ticket window will be closed. Tickets may still be purchased at the El Segundo Club location.

Airman's Attic Now Open

The Attic is located in Bldg. 37 on Fort MacArthur. New operating hours are Wednesday and Friday evenings from 6 to 8 pm. There is no weekend service. For more information, please call (310) 653-6767 or (310) 221-0909.

Local School Information Available on Base

Los Angeles County is composed of the City of Los Angeles plus 89 communities and more than 80 school districts The Airman & Family Readiness Center can assist you with enrollment procedures, information about magnet schools, South Bay school districts, home schooling resources and private schools. A&FRC also handles all inter- and intra- district transfer for military children.

Airman & Family Readiness Center Holds Classes

Personal Finance Basics, Sept. 11, 1 to 2 p.m.
Mandatory class for all E/1-E/4 and 01-02 who are new to Los Angeles AFB. Learn budgeting basics, balancing a checkbook, and how to live within your means.

Managing Your Move, Sept. 13, 8:30 to 10 a.m.
For any PCS move, planning is crucial to your sanity. Briefings will be provided by the Clinic, Traffic Management, Legal, and Military Finance. Civilians welcome.

Four Lenses: Know Your Boss, Sept. 17, 8 to 11:30 a.m.
This three and half hour workshop focuses on temperament intelligence using the Four Lenses method -knowledge and application in personality temperament. This methodology can become a power skill for understanding and appreciating others in many settings including employee's performances, goal setting, team/project management, leadership and personal relationships.

Group Pre-Separation Class, Sept. 10 and 17 1 to 2 p.m.
This class is mandatory for all personnel retiring/separating from the military. It should be taken at least 90 days before your date of retiring/separating or signing up for the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) Class.

Transition Assistance Program, Sept. 18-21, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Transition Assistance Program (TAP) is dedicated to equipping separating and retiring military personnel for reentry to private sector. The program interfaces with State of California, Department of Veterans Affairs and Disabled American Veterans. Bring your medical records. Dress: Casual Business.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month, themed "Hispanic Americans: Making a Positive Impact on American Society," will be celebrated Oct. 18 in the Paulikas Mall at 11 a.m. Belinda Guadarrama, president and CEO of GC Micro, will be the guest speaker. Ticket Office Relocated

Effective June 11, the Ticket Office relocated to the cashier's office in The Club (Bldg. 270). Purpose of the move is to bring this important office closer to base traffic so as to be more convenient for its customers. Telephone number for tickets is (310) 653-1304. Tickets for various local attractions and movie theaters are for sale at discounted prices. Outdoor Recreation is still the place to go to rent equipment and sign up for adventure trips.
