Los Angeles Air Force Base -- Here's the latest news of interest to the LAAFB community.

Aviation Gate Closed Until Nov. 22

As part of the ongoing force protection upgrades to the LAAFB perimeter fences and gates, the Aviation Blvd Gate will be closed for approximately two months, starting Sept. 22. The estimated completion date is Nov. 21. Security Forces will make adjustments at the Douglas St Gate to minimize traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours. Left turns are now allowed exiting the Douglas St. gate.

Outdoor Recreation Trips Planned

Outdoor Recreation has two upcoming adventures planned. A 6-mile roundtrip hike will be held to Sandstone Peak in the Santa Monica Mountains, Sept 27. The cost is $15 for transportation. On Oct. 4, sail the El Mirage Dry Lake Bed on a land yacht, which is a wheeled cart-like boat powered by the wind. No experience is necessary. Cost is $35 and includes transportation, instruction and equipment. For more information or to sign up for either trip, call (310) 653-6852.

Fort Mac Pool is Open

The Hey Rookie Pool on Fort MacArthur will be open until Nov. 1 for lap swimming and weekend open swim. Hours are Monday, Tuesday and Friday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (lap swim only), and Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (open swim). For more information, call (310) 653-8260.

Spouses Club Holds Survivor Night

The LAAFB Spouses Club is hosting a Survivor Night at the Fort MacArthur Community Center, Sept. 23. The event starts at 7 p.m. For more information or general information about the club, visit its website at www.laafsc.com.

Hispanic Heritage Month Luncheon Held

SMC Hispanic American Group and The Aerospace Hispanic Advisory council celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a luncheon at the Gordon Conference Center, Oct. 14, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sylvia Mendez will speak about "Landmark Latino History in So Cal." Tickets on sale now and cost $13 or $11 with club discount.

Ticket Office Offers Deals

Tickets for various local attractions and movie theaters are for sale at discounted prices. The Ticket Office is located in the cashier's office in The Club (Bldg. 270). Call (310) 653-1304 for more information. Outdoor Recreation is still the place to go to rent equipment and sign up for adventure trips; however, discount tickets are no longer sold at Outdoor Adventures.

LAAFB Toastmasters Club Meetings Held

The club meets every Wednesday, noon to 1 p.m. Meetings are held in Bldg. 271, 3rd Floor, Rm. B3-642. For more information, call (310) 416-9898 Ext 138.

Airman's Attic Now Open

The Attic is located in Bldg. 37 on Fort MacArthur. Operating hours are Wednesday and Friday evenings from 6 to 8 pm. There are no weekend hours. For more information, call (310) 653-6767 or (310) 221-0909.
