Los Angeles Air Force Base -- Here's the latest news of interest to the LAAFB community.

Aviation Gate Closed Until Nov. 22

As part of the ongoing force protection upgrades to the LAAFB perimeter fences and gates, the Aviation Blvd Gate will be closed for approximately two months. The estimated completion date is Nov. 21. Security Forces will make adjustments at the Douglas St. Gate to minimize traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours. Left turns are now allowed exiting the Douglas St. gate.

Fort Mac Pool Still Open

The Hey Rookie Pool on Fort MacArthur will be opened until Nov. 1 for lap swimming and weekend open swim. Hours are Monday, Tuesday and Friday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (lap swim only), and Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (open swim). For more information, call (310) 653-8260.

Hispanic Heritage Month Luncheon Held

SMC Hispanic American Group and The Aerospace Hispanic Advisory council celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a luncheon at the Gordon Conference Center, Oct. 14, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sylvia Mendez will speak about "Landmark Latino History in So Cal." Tickets on sale now and cost $13 or $11 with club discount.

A&FRC Offers Saving and Investing Class 

When you hear "CD" do you think of a silver disc that contains music? Ever wonder what the difference is between a ROTH and a Traditional IRA? If so, it's time to learn the basics of investing! This class covers the tools for meeting short and long term savings goals, including CDs, IRAs, mutual funds, stocks and bonds. Saving and Investing 101 will be held on Oct. 9, from 1-3 p.m. in Bldg. 272, Room C1-235. To register, call the Airman & Family Readiness Center at 310-653-5428. 

SMC Dining Out Tickets Now on Sale 

The 2008 SMC Dining Out is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Gordon Conference Center. Only 400 tickets will be sold...so get yours today! A formal dinner followed by fun in The Club featuring a live band --The Land Sharks, a DJ and dancing, a cash bar and a caricature artist. Babysitting will be available at the CDC for only $5 per hour (4-hour minimum). 

All LA AFB employees including military, government civilian, support contractors and FFRDC employees are invited. Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased daily at the entrance to the Club from 11:30 a.m. to12:30 p.m. Tickets can also be purchased online with a credit/debit card at http://www.smcdiningout.com. 61 MSS Customer Service/ID Card Office Closure 

The 61 MSS Customer Service/ID Cards Office will be closed on Friday, Oct. 24 for an official system upgrade. 

Fitness Center Sponsors Halloween 5K, Dodge Ball Tournament 

A 5K run/walk will be held starting at noon, Oct. 15. Participants are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes. In addition to the regular 5K, a relay race will be run. Each member of a three-member team will run a mile in a costume and pass it to the next teammate who will put it on and run the next leg of the race. 

On Oct. 26, the Fitness Center will hold a Dodge Ball Costume Tournament. Play begins at noon in the center's gym.

Ticket Office Offers Deals

Tickets for various local attractions and movie theaters are for sale at discounted prices. Knotts Berry Farm and Universal Studios Halloween event tickets are now on sale. The Ticket Office is located in the cashier's office in The Club (Bldg. 270). Call (310) 653-1304 for more information. Outdoor Recreation is still the place to go to rent equipment and sign up for adventure trips; however, discount tickets are no longer sold at Outdoor Adventures.

LAAFB Toastmasters Club Meetings Held

The club meets every Wednesday, noon to 1 p.m. Meetings are held in Bldg. 271, 3rd Floor, Rm. B3-642. For more information, call (310) 416-9898 Ext 138.

Airman's Attic Now Open

The Attic is located in Bldg. 37 on Fort MacArthur. Operating hours are Wednesday and Friday evenings from 6 to 8 pm. There are no weekend hours. For more information, call (310) 653-6767 or (310) 221-0909.
