Los Angeles AFB RideShare & Parking programs

Let's face it: You're not in Kansas any more! For that matter, you're not in "The Big Apple" (New York City), "Beantown" (Boston), or "Foggy Bottom" (Washington, D.C.) either with their well-established mass transit systems.

You're in L.A., the "Car-obsessed Capital of the World," aka Freeway Central, where the SoCal locals have a saying: "Anything under three hours is considered a commute."

So, what can you do if you're low on fuel and Pay Day is a week away -- or worse, you have no wheels at all to get around town? Check out the answers below.

Traffic Tips & Commuter Hints

Traffic in Southern California can be daunting -- just ask anyone who's driven the 405 or any other numbered SoCal freeway system during the morning or evening rush hour.

Since Los Angeles AFBis the only active military installation remaining in the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area, many personnel commute from base housing at Fort MacArthur in San Pedro. That's a trip of 18.8 miles that can take more than 30 minutes, one-way.

Many other dedicated road warriors commute from as far away as the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys in the north, Malibu and Simi Valleyto the west, San Bernardino and Riverside to the east or Long Beach and Costa Mesa to the south. Alternate methods of transportation to and from work are recommended to lower costs for your vehicle, lower congestion on the roads and lower stress for you.

In partnership with the Department of Transportation, Los Angeles AFB administers a Mass Transportation Benefit Program called TRANServe to help offset the costs of using mass transit and other transportation alternatives. The Los Angeles AFB RideShare program offers three options for you to take advantage of Mass Transit,Vanpool and Carpool.

Los Angeles and Southern California is crisscrossed with a myriad of mass transit options:

Beach Cities Transit
City of ElSegundo Transportation Service
City of Gardena Municipal Bus Line
City of San Pedro DASH
LADOT Transit Commuter Express

Santa Monica Big Blue Bus
Torrance Transit

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, otherwise known as Metro, which directly operates bus, light rail, heavy rail, and bus rapid transit services within Los Angeles County. This includes:

MetroLink for intra-city travel
Metrorail for inter-city transportation

The vanpool system is a series of privately-leased mini- and full-sizedvans with routes servicing Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura counties, as well as the westernmost portions of San Bernardino and Riverside counties. Our vanpool vehicles and lease agreements are administered byEnterprise Rideshare and vRide. Locating a vanpool is easy; just contact the Los Angeles AFB RideShare office, or check the InsideSMC electronic bulletin board. You can also contact either the Enterprise or vRide account representatives for more information.

Los Angeles AFB's carpool system is less formal but no less useful. Roommates and co-workers that ride together may receive a carpool pass that will allow them to park on base within designated carpool parking spaces.
