SBIRS GEO-1 Launch

Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla. (May 7, 2011) – The Air Force’s Space Based Infrared Systems GEO-1 payload is launched aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket from Space Launch Complex-41 here at 2:10 p.m. EDT. SBIRS is designed to provide global, overhead, persistent, infrared surveillance capability to meet 21st century demands in mission areas including missile warning, missile defense, technical intelligence and battlespace awareness. LAAFB Remediation Project

SBIRS GEO-1

The first Space Based Infrared Systems geosynchronous (GEO-1) satellite was off-loaded from a C-5 Galaxy aircraft at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., March 3. The encapsulated satellite was transported to the Defense Satellite Communications System Processing Facility where final check out and tests will be performed prior to launch. SST Integrated Training Center

General William Shelton, Air Force Space Command commander, visits the Standard Space Trainer Integrated Training Center at Schriever Air Force Base, Feb. 25. The center trains satellite operators in a realistic setting. Spearheaded by the Space and Missile Systems Center Space Training Acquisition Office, Air Force Research Lab and AETC in 2006, the project was envisioned as a cost effective, quality training system built on a common training architecture.
