The 2008 income tax return season has begun and taxpayers who have not yet filed their returns are encouraged to do so before the April 15 deadline.

The Los Angeles Air Force Base Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Tax Center offers free tax preparation services. The center is staffed by trained, IRS-certified volunteer tax preparers, who provide face-to-face assistance. The Tax Center is also supported by a dedicated IRS hotline to help complete tax returns.

Active-duty military personnel, retirees and their dependents can take advantage of this service. Appointments are required and can be made by calling (310) 653-3084. The tax center will be accepting appointments through April 10.

Please bring proof of identity; copies of all W-2, 1098 and 1099 forms; Social Security or Individual Tax Identification numbers for all individuals listed on the return; child care provider's identification number; banking information; the amounts and dates of estimated or other tax payments made; and a list of all income sources to your appointment.

Located in Bldg. 271, the Tax Center is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Military and civilian personnel also can access a number of web sites, telephone numbers or tax offices to help prepare their returns. The Federal Web site is www.irs.gov. For general information about Federal taxes, call (800) 829-1040 or for information about forms, call (800) 829-3676.
