Commissioned by the Air Force Association to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Western Development Division, forerunner of today’s Space and Missile Systems Center, the steel-and-aluminum spherical sculpture was created in 1978 by San Pedro artist Jack Brogan. The inner rings of the monument represent the Earth, while the outer rings represent the tracks of satellites developed by SMC orbiting around it. (U.S. Air Force photo/Joseph Juarez)
