STEM Event
Students from five local area high schools teamed up with Space and Missile Systems Center mentors atop of the Los Angeles AFB, 7th floor parking lot, where they launched payloads and recorded flight data and or went back to the drawing board to make improvements, Jun 16, 2014. The STEM event is part of the SMC 60th Anniversary as the six teams were responsible for “fundamental design practices to... develop imaging and data acquisition payloads to be launched from the roof of the parking garage. Students were responsible for designing, building, integrating and testing electronics packages into a bus structure capable of surviving launch, flight and recovery. A small parachute will be deployed from each payload to increase time aloft to gather data. Data and imagery will be acquired and judges will evaluate the payloads on functionality, structural integrity and aesthetics”. Photo by Joe Juarez
