LOS ANGELES AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- During a live and virtual ceremony, today, Los Angeles welcomed a new base commander for Space Base Delta 3, Col. Mia Walsh.
As the commander, Col. Walsh is responsible for Force Support, Security Forces, Communication, Civil Engineering and Logistics, and Medical Squadrons.
"SBD-3 is critical in our Space Force’s organizational structure,” said Col. Walsh. “As a support organization, ensuring every Airman and Guardian has the necessary tools, infrastructure, and resources to fulfill their mission allows our personnel to focus on combatting threats in the space domain.”
“SBD-3 continues a mission set with a multi-decade rich legacy under Col. Walsh’s command. Her unique background in space and her time as a squadron commander make her uniquely qualified to be an installation commander and the first commander of Space Base Delta 3,” said Lt. Gen. Michael Guetlein, commander, Space Systems Command (SSC). “Under your leadership, Space Base Delta 3 will be critical to our success as a Nation
Col. Walsh is a native of Hilo, Hawaii and a 24-year military veteran with a background in space operations. Over the course of her tenure she has held various assignments within Air Force Space Command and also on the Air Staff and Joint Staff working in Space Domain Awareness (SDA) and Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD). Recently, Col. Walsh completed an assignment as the Chief of Operations at the Pentagon’s National Military Command Center.
During this change of command ceremony the base furthered its commitment to the space mission by deactivating Los Angeles Garrison to establish SBD-3.
“When I think about leadership, I think of Gen Colin Powell, who stated that leadership is all about people. You have to be people-centered,” Col Walsh said. “As your new commander, I look forward to working with the Airmen and Guardians of Space Base Delta-3 to provide first class support to SSC. Without a quality support system an organization can falter; however, here at SBD-3, our first-class support builds a first-class enterprise."
Col. Walsh received command from Col. Becky Beers, who will serve as the Deputy Chief Information Security Officer at Headquarters Air Force in Washington, D.C.
