Air Force Capt. Joshua D. Baird assumed command of the 61st Security Forces Squadron from Maj. Naomi Villalobos during a change of command ceremony at the Schriever Courtyard at Los Angeles Air Force Base, California, June 12, 2026. U.S. Space Force Col. Andrew C. Dermanoski, commander of Space Base Delta 3, officiated the ceremony.

The passing of the unit’s military flag symbolized the transfer of authority, trust, and responsibility of the 61st SFS from the outgoing to the incoming commander.

The backdrop for Villalobos’ future endeavors started in January 2025, with the devastating Palisades Fire. While it didn’t threaten the base directly, Dermanoski credited her with “Coordinating and ensuring that our federal partners and fire, and everybody else in the Federal Emergency Management Agency had a place that they knew they could go.”

From helping tamp down a serial arsonist at White Point Nature Preserve, located near the Fort MacArthur base housing in San Pedro, to running active shooter exercises on the main installation with El Segundo emergency responders, Villalobos worked tirelessly to strengthen partnerships across the large swath of LA AFB communities. Not only did she direct law enforcement, but she also integrated defense and anti-terrorism operations across 56 geographically separate units and Los Angeles International Airport. In recognition of these achievements, Villalobos was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.

“Today is more than just a change of command. It's about celebrating two years of accomplishments, challenges, growth, teamwork, and service,” said Villalobos. “Over the last two years, we've experienced just about everything. We've navigated government shutdowns. We responded during one of the largest California wildfires we've ever seen. We've adapted to changes in security environments driven by conflicts occurring around the globe. We've protected Space Systems Command's mission as America continued pushing boundaries of what is possible in space. We've supported distinguished visitors, senior leaders, foreign dignitaries, and mission partners,” she said. Villalobos will continue to reside in the local community.

“Saying I’m excited to be here would be a massive understatement,” said Baird after receiving his squadron’s first salute as their leader. “I’m thrilled to be part of Space Base Delta 3 and have the opportunity to work with all of the members of our Defender family, the Space Force family, and all of our local partners.”

The 61st Security Forces Squadron at Los Angeles Air Force Base provides the highest level of integrated base defense to the Los Angeles Air Force Base community through unmatched force protection and law enforcement services. The 61st SFS leadership team and support staff consist of Department of the Air Force civilians and active-duty Security Forces members.
