Space Acquisition School class 2006C spent approximately four hours cleaning up both Manhattan and Hermosa Beaches, July 14. The 14-class members unanimously elected this event as their required community outreach project. Two of the SAS instructors, Maj. John Morales, MILSATCOM Systems Wing, and Capt. Ilyan Lavanway, Launch and Range Systems Wing, joined in to participate with the class.

The Heal the Bay Foundation, a nonprofit organization which coordinates volunteer coastal improvement projects, supplied class members with the necessary supplies -- trash bags, protective latex gloves and helpful instructions, which specified what should and should not be collected for safety reasons. The class picked up trash from 7 to 11 a.m. to avoid heavy beach traffic.

Beachgoers were quick to complement the volunteers as they made the beach both safer and more enjoyable for everyone. One civilian even volunteered to picking up trash with the group, spending a few hours of her time trolling the beach.

In the end, class members were glad they were able to help the community they live in and improve the environment at the same time.
