Lt. Gen. Michael Hamel, Space and Missile Systems Center commander, has designated June 15 as the Sixth Annual SMC Sports Day.

Hosted by 61st Mission Support Group Services division and the Company Grade Officers' Association, Sports Day 2007 promises a day of healthy fun and competition for active duty and civilian employees of Los Angeles Air Force Base.

The event will kick off at 8 a.m. at the Fort MacArthur Parade Grounds with a 5-K run. For the next eight hours, participants will face some 15 different competitive events ranging from horseshoes and table tennis to tennis, volleyball, softball and dodge ball. There will even be a water balloon catapult contest.

"Depending on their choices, individuals should be able to participate in some two or three different events throughout the day," said Fitness Center director Eva Lawson. "There are both individual and team competitions."

Team designations have already been made and Sports Day point of contacts for each unit will be announced May 23. Individuals can register for the different events by contacting their unit's POC.

"Contact your executive officer to find out who is representing your unit," said Ms. Lawson.

Gold, silver and bronze medallions will be awarded to the winners of each activity. In addition there will be a team award to be determined by head counts taken for each unit at the beginning and the end of the event.

The day's activities will conclude at 4 p.m. with the presentation of awards. Additional information can be obtained by calling the El Segundo Fitness Center at 310-653-6771 or POCs Capt. Jamie Johnson at 310-653-3705 or 2nd Lt. Brian Phillips at 310-653-6546.
