Los Angeles Air Force Base -- Here's the latest news of interest to the LAAFB community.
Ticket Office Relocated
Effective June 11, the Ticket Office presently located in Outdoor Recreation at the northeast edge of the base will be relocated to the cashier's office in The Club (Bldg. 270). Purpose of the move is to bring this important office closer to base traffic so as to be more convenient for its customers. Telephone number for tickets will be (310)653-1304. Tickets for various local attractions and movie theaters are for sale at discounted prices.
Ride Share Vouchers Distributed June 7
Attention Rideshare participants. The Department of Transportation (DOT) will be here Thursday, June 7 to distribute vouchers to all Rideshare participants. Distribution will take place in Bldg. 271, 1st floor Conference Room (Rm. 417) between the hours of 8 a.m and 3 p.m.
Base Swimming Pool Now Open
The heated pool located across the street from the Fort MacArthur
Community Center is now open. Its initial hours of operation will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays; 12 noon to 8 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. The pool will be closed Wednesdays for maintenance. Swim lessons are scheduled to begin on June 18 and will be conducted from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Lesson sign-ups will commence on June 11. Group lessons are priced at $20 per person for four hours of instruction. Private lessons are priced at $60 per person for four hours. Family and individual season passes are now available at the pool. They are priced according to rank and start at $20 for individuals and $40 for families. Get Heart Smart
Approximately 65 million Americans have hypertension (high blood pressure), a major risk factor for two of the leading causes of death in this country - heart disease and stroke. About one in four adults have high blood pressure (greater than 140/90 mm Hg). Only 47 percent of adults have ideal blood pressure (less than 120/80 mm Hg). After age 50, the incidence of high blood pressure increases. What are the other risk factors for hypertension? Excessive body weight, high salt or sodium intake, drinking too much alcohol, sedentary lifestyle, smoking and an unhealthy diet. Do you have the dangerous disease? The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) eating plan has been shown to high blood pressure. Attend the DASH to Control Hypertension class at the Health and Wellness Center (HAWC) on Tuesday, June 12 from 9 to 10:30 a.m.. This class is offered monthly and open to all active duty, family members, retirees and DoD civilians but advance registration is necessary. June Clinic Closure
The 61st Medical Group (both LAAFB and Ft Mac Clinics) including pharmacy will be closed Thursday, June 7 for a Training Day. In the event of an emergency (threat to life, limb or eye-sight), please dial 911. The on-call provider can be reached at (310) 653-CURE (2873)--option 7.
School/Sports Physicals Offered
School/Sport Physical Day will be held Tuesday, 12 June 2007 at Fort MacArthur Clinic. Please bring school registration forms and immunization records. The clinic will only see school/sport physical patients on this day. For information and/or scheduling, please call the clinic at (310) 653-2873.
Track Rules Must be Followed
The new Los Angeles Air Force Base .5-mile running track is now open. All personnel are reminded to heed the follow rules. 1. WARFIT testing takes precedence over all others on the track. 2. The track is for exercise purposes only (running and walking). 3. No bikes, skates, strollers or other wheeled implements are allowed on the track. 4. No hard-soled shoes are allowed on the running track. This includes boots, high heels, dress shoes or other shoes with heels. 5. No pets allowed on the track at any time. 6. Walkers must use the outer perimeter. 7. Track direction will be one-way in a counter-clockwise direction at all times.
Base Fund Raising Needs Approval First
Any private organization or unofficial activity organizational party interested in holding a fundraiser in any Los Angeles Air force Base facility must be approved by 61 MSG/CC through 61 MSG/SVF prior to advertising the event. In addition, no PO or UA my sell or serve alcoholic beverages on the base. Contact the 61st Services at 310-653-5157 to obtain the most current fundraiser and alcohol guidance and request form.
Scholarships Available for Family Members
For the eleventh year, Air Force Clubs will provide $25,000 in scholarships that are sponsored in part by Chase Bank and the Coca-Cola Company. Applicants for the six scholarships must have been accepted by or are enrolled in an accredited college or university for the fall term or already be part or full-time students. Student enrollment status may involve either undergraduate or graduate curriculum. Only club members and their family members are eligible to participate. This includes the member's spouse, son, daughter, stepson or stepdaughter. Grandchildren are also eligible if they are dependents of the club member. Award of scholarship money is based on a written essay of no more than 500 words around the theme of "Why is air superiority critical today?" Deadline for submitting essays to the 61 MSG Services' Director is June 15, 2007. The final scholarship awards for the upcoming school year are announced each October.
