SMC Annual Award Tickets Now on Sale

Tickets are now on sale for the SMC Annual Awards Banquet to be held Feb. 22 at the Proud Bird Restaurant. Based on rank, tickets cost between $20 and $55 and are available from various unit POCs. The banquet starts at 6 p.m. with a social hour. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m. The menu choices are steak, chicken marsala or vegetarian meal. Teams and individuals are nominated for awards in 14 categories, which will be presented at the banquet.

Spouse Club Auction for Education Coming March 7

The Los Angeles Air Force Spouses' Club 12th Annual Auction for Education will be held Friday, March 7 at 6 p.m. at the Fort MacArthur Community Center in San Pedro. The evening will feature a buffet dinner, live entertainment, raffles, and live and silent auctions. Auction items include passes and certificates to area amusement parks, skydiving, local restaurants and stores, home-based businesses and much more. New Extreme Cycling Class Offered

A new extreme cycling class will offered at the Fitness Center beginning Feb. 25. The class runs from 7 to 7:45 a.m.,  every Monday. Research shows that in an average 30 minute spinning class, up to 500 calories can be burned. People at all fitness levels can safely enjoy a heart pounding spinning workout because you can work at your own pace.

Spouses Club Offers Scholarships

The LAAFB offers scholarships to dependent children of active duty, retired military or DOD civilian employees. Entrants must also be a high school senior graduating this year. Application deadline is March 1. For more information, contact Peg Fram at (937) 830-9315 or pega13@yahoo.com.

Bicycle Safety Rodeo to be Held Feb. 23

The DoD Police Bike Patrol is hosting a bicycle safety rodeo for children ages 6 through 13 at the Fort Mac Community Center, Feb. 23. Registration starts at 10 a.m. Helmets are required for all riders participating.

Big Bear, Lake Tahoe Ski Trips Planned

The snow pack is growing in the Sierras and Outdoor Recreation is planning two more ski trips in February to get out and enjoy this year's good conditions. A day trip is being planned to Big Bear on Feb. 15. The $35 cost covers transportation. Lift tickets aren't included; however, discounted weekday tickets are available at the ticket office for the Feb. 15 trip. A weekend trip to Lake Tahoe is planned, Feb. 29 through March 2. The trip costs $160, which includes transportation and accommodations in Reno. Space is limited. Snow boards and ski clothing are available for rent through Outdoor Recreation. Ticket Office Offers Deals

Tickets for various local attractions and movie theaters are for sale at discounted prices. Discounted weekday lift tickets to Big Bear resort are now on sale. The Ticket Office is located in the cashier's office in The Club (Bldg. 270). Call (310) 653-1304 for more information. Outdoor Recreation is still the place to go to rent equipment and sign up for adventure trips; however, discount tickets are no longer sold at Outdoor Adventures.

TV Show Taping

The Community Center is organizing a trip to see a taping of the Price is Right, Feb. 20. The trip costs $6 for transportation. Participants must be 18 years old or older to attend the taping. For more information, call (310) 653-8225.

HAWC Lunch and Learn Address Speeding Up Metabolism Naturally

Come learn what you can do to give your metabolism a boost naturally. Sign up now to attend February's Lunch-N-Learn with the Dietitian, Feb 28 from noon to 1 p.m. Bring your lunch to this class which is open to all active duty, family members, retirees and DoD civilians but advance registration is necessary. Call the Health and Wellness Center (HAWC) at (310) 653-6736 to sign up or for more information. The HAWC is located inside the Fitness Center.

Whale Watching Trips to Benefit Base' s Asian - Pacific American Organization

The base' s Asian - Pacific American Organization is sponsoring two whale watching trips as a fundraiser. The second and final trip sails from San Pedro's Ports O' Call berth at 1 pm., Feb. 16. The trips cost $20 or adults and $15 for children. Tickets are available from individual unit POCs.

LAAFB Toastmasters Club Meetings Held

The club meets every Wednesday, noon to 1 p.m. Meetings are held in Bldg. 271, 3rd Floor, Rm. B3-642. For more information, call Cleve Carter (310) 416-9898 Ext 138."

Airman's Attic Now Open

The Attic is located in Bldg. 37 on Fort MacArthur. Operating hours are Wednesday and Friday evenings from 6 to 8 pm. There are no weekend hours. For more information, call (310) 653-6767 or (310) 221-0909.

Los Angeles County is composed of the City of Los Angeles plus 89 communities and more than 80 school districts The Airman & Family Readiness Center can assist you with enrollment procedures, information about magnet schools, South Bay school districts, home schooling resources and private schools. A&FRC also handles all inter- and intra- district transfer for military children.
