Retired pioneers of Manned Spaceflight Engineer program

Brig. Gen. Mark Baird, vice commander of the Space and Missile Systems Center at Los Angeles Air Force Base, California, addresses the audience attending the 2016 Legacy Panel, hosted by the Secretary of the Air Force Special Projects. Headlining this year’s panel were six retired Air Force officers: from left to right, Lt. Gen. Mike Hamel, Maj. Gen. John Kulpa, Jr., and Cols. William Pailes, Daryl Joseph, Cols. Gary Payton, and Brett Watterson, who discussed the Manned Spaceflight Engineer program, an elite corps of military astronauts specializing in deploying top-secret payloads that the National Reconnaissance Office and Space Division, forerunner of today’s SMC. The annual event offered a unique opportunity to hear from distinguished individuals who have been to space or had a significant impact on military space operations.
