Space Base Delta 3 hosts annual POW/MIA run to honor service members and families

What: Space Base Delta 3, located at Los Angeles Air Force Base in El Segundo, Calif., will honor prisoners of war and those missing in action by hosting their annual 24-hour POW/MIA Torch Relay in the spirit of our nation's remembrance.

The relay begins at Terminal Island at 9 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 15 where the POW/MIA Recognition Day will start with a Torch Lighting Ceremony. Various base and community organizations (LA AFB Deltas, MEPS, USCG & Local Police Departments) will carry the torch while running relay legs from Terminal Island to LA AFB. The torch will then travel around the base track until the Wreath Laying Ceremony at 10 a.m. the following morning on Friday, Sept. 16. The relay comprises nine legs off-base with each leg spanning six miles for a total of 54 miles.

 

When: Thursday, Sept. 15 from 9 a.m. and Friday, Sept. 16 at 10 a.m. (PT)

Thursday, September 15

·         9 a.m. - 9 a.m. – Torch Lighting Ceremony with opening remarks from Space Base Delta 3 Commander, Colonel Mia L. Walsh to begin the 24-hour torch relay.

·         9:30 a.m. - 10 a.m. - Interviews with SBD3 leadership and event coordinators and participants.

Friday, September 16

 ·         10 a.m. -11 a.m. – Wreath Laying Ceremony, remarks by SBD 3 Leadership. Will recognize POW/MIA run participants as well as close the event.

·         11 a.m. - Noon - Interviews with SBD3 leadership and event coordinators and participants.

RSVP: Due to security requirements, attending media must RSVP to the Space Systems Command Public Affairs Media org box (sscpa.media@spaceforce.mil) before close of business on Monday, Sept. 12.

Arrival Instructions: Credentialed media who RSVP on or before Monday, Sept. 15 will meet at for the Torch Lighting Ceremony on Thursday, September 15 at Terminal Island Visitors Center located at 1001 S Seaside Ave. San Pedro, Ca. 90731 from 8-9 a.m.

Those who would like to also attend the Wreath Laying Ceremony on Friday, Sept. 16 will meet at the LA AFB Visitors center located directly to the left of the Douglas Street entrance to Los Angeles Air Force Base. Media will be escorted to the event location(s) from 8:30-9 a.m. and from 9:30-10 a.m.
